About Michael

A long-time Steinbach resident, Michael Zwaagstra graduated from Steinbach Regional Secondary School in 1993.  Afterwards, he attended the University of Manitoba where he completed his Bachelor of Education.  Since August 2000, he has been employed as a teacher with Hanover School Division and currently teaches high school social studies.  In 2005, he graduated with his masters degree in educational administration from the University of Manitoba.

Michael is active in the community and currently serves as board chair of Steinbach Christian Schools (SBC/SCHS) and as a board member with HavenGroup. He attends Evangelical Fellowship Church where he teaches adult Sunday School. Michael also writes a weekly column in The Carillon called “Think Again.”

In 2010, Michael co-authored the book, What’s Wrong With Our Schools and How We Can Fix Them. His columns promoting common sense education reform have been published in major daily newspapers such as the National Post, Globe and Mail, and Winnipeg Free Press.

On a campaign platform emphasizing fresh ideas and traditional values, Michael was first elected to Steinbach City Council in October, 2006.  Since being elected, he has sought to represent the wishes of Steinbach residents by taking a fiscally responsible approach to governing the city.

Michael and his wife Angela have been married for ten years and they have four children, including two foster sons.
